I do fun stuff. Since the "projects" field above is failing, here's my overview:
- International Modern Media Institute, working towards rethinking media regulation for the digital age. We want to help better protect freedom of the press the world over by researching best practices in law and promoting their widespread adoption. We drafted the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative. The Icelandic Parliament unanimously agreed to task the government with implementing the protections we proposed, and this work is now in progress. IMMI, the institute, aims to further drive the implementation of this legal framework as well as help scholars, activists and lawmakers achieve similar legislative change in their own countries. The video below focuses on Iceland but does an excellent job of explaining the ideas behind IMMI.
- FSFÍ, the Icelandic Digital Freedoms Society. Promoting Free Software, Free Hardware and Free Culture in Iceland.
- CAST, The Constitutional Analysis Support Team. Providing computational linguistic and threat-modelling analysis support to countries developing new constitutions. Worked with the Icelandic constituional assembly in 2011, and has since engaged with constitional assemblies, activists and other interest groups in countries such as Tunisia and Morocco.
- The Shadow Parliament Project. A meta-project promoting the development of ad-hoc direct democracy throughout the world. Has spawned several projects, including the Citizen's Foundation, which operates a direct democracy system in relation with Reykjavík's city council - including crowdsourced budgeting, and the software project Wassa2il, which is aimed at helping polities at any scale self-organize and collaborate in decisionmaking processes - in particular focused on the Arab world. Also designs, develops and facilitates offline democracy methods.
- Digital Rights Watch (DiRiWa). A civil society counterpart to the CIA World Factbook, DiRiWa monitors the global situation in free speech, surveillance, censorship, intellectual monopolies, and so on. Currently in massive redesign, the new system will automatically observe and manage relationships between over 500 sociopolitical entities, including countries, dependencies, blocs, unions, trade agreements, treaties and geographical regions.
- Fab Labs and Hacker Spaces. Promoting decentralization of access to manufacturing capacity, empowering the public by making it possible for each and every individual to learn how to build and operate the most advanced industrial equipment - with the explicit understanding that without access to the means of production, people cannot be free.
